Thousands of cars in Greece are without vehicle insurance or roadworthiness test, Parliament told

In a document signed by Public Order and Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Dendias on June 3 before his transfer to the development ministry, traffic police say that 10,925 tickets were handed out for failing to produce evidence of passing the KTEO test and 18,501 for lacking mandatory third-party vehicle

insurance in the first four months of the year.

The figures were requested by Democratic Left (DIM.AR) MP Asiminia Xirotiri-Aikaterinari, who said the problem was a major road safety issue, as well as a major loss of revenue for the state.

Deputy Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Mihalis Papadopoulos, on his part, said that eradicating the phenomenon of vehicles circulating without undergoing KTEO tests and endangering road safety was among the ministry's main goals.

The public order ministry also reported that instructions have been given to step up inspections in this area.
