An article of the renowned and widely circulated German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung is reffering at the latest greek-turkish dispute as far as it concerns the drillings in the Aegean Sea and the southeastern Mediterranean pointing out that: “Due to the fact that president Recep Tayyip Erdogan

is not fearful of military escalation, the Turkish and Greek frigates came dangerously close to each other [in the area of Kastellorizo island]. Chancellor Merkel at the last moment has been able to mediate between the two NATO member-states, and de-escalate a rapidly evolving situation that could lead even to a full-scale war. Ankara for the time being has postponed its provocative drilling program in the Aegean, however now the two parties will have to negotiate. This, consequently means that Greece will have to distance itself from its hardest – maximalistic concerning its sovereignty rights over more than 3,000 islands and islets. This is a victory beyond doubt for the ‘swordsman’ Erdogan, who is seeking a distribution of the underwater hydrocarbons in the Aegean sea.”

Gerhard Schröder: Supporting Greece to the German national interest

On the other hand, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder published an article in the German economics newspaper Handelsblatt under the title “Europe should become more European”. As the former Chancellor states clearly in his article: «It is to best of the national interest to support the countries which have suffered the most from the economic [and coronavirus] crises in order to fully recover. This applies for France, our most important political partner within the EU, but it also entails Italy, Spain and Greece. Germany currently exports 60% of its products to the EU countries. Consumption though in the above mentioned countries, which has been deeply affected by the coronavirus pandemic, acts as a guarantee to our prosperity and our jobs”.
