Starting Summer 2014 in Athens

We cordially invite you to enroll on the Institute of Education’s Masters degree in leadership. This Masters degree has been jointly developed by the Institute of Education,

University of London and the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation for the benefit of the teachers working at Athens College and Psychico College. This invitation to join the third cohort of this successful MA programme has now been extended to other teachers working in schools and colleges in Greece.

The aims of the IOE’s MA Leadership course are:

to equip you with a body of knowledge that will improve your understanding of leadership and learning in educational institutions, particularly schools;to enable you to reflect critically on key areas of theory, empirical research and values underpinning leadership, adult and student learning and learning communities;to enable you to apply key theories and research findings to your own working environment;to enable you to analyse and reflect critically on the wider educational policy context as it impacts on leadership and learning and the raising of standards;to enable you to explore ways in which leadership can contribute to the improvement of educational systems and institutions and particularly to the quality of teaching and learning;to foster reflection on practice throughout the course and particularly through engagement with other course participants.

PROGRAMME OF STUDY

The course consists of:

one core 30-credit Master’s level module:

- Leading and Managing Change and Improvement

three 30-credit modules chosen from a range of options, andeither the 60-credit Dissertation (20k words) or a further optional module and a 30-credit Report (10k words).

The degree of Master of Arts in Leadership (180 credits) shall be awarded by the Institute of Education, University of London on the successful completion of the programme. A Post-Graduate Certificate in Leadership can be awarded for those who wish to exit the programme after successful completion of two modules (60 credits). The Post-Graduate Diploma can be awarded on completion of four modules (120 credits).

It is anticipated that you will complete within three years, however you may apply to the Institute to extend your period of study up to a maximum of four years.

TEACHING TIMETABLE

Teaching is by mixed mode with some modules taught face-to-face in Athens and at the Institute of Education (London) during a two-week Summer School, with the remaining modules by distance learning through the University of London (International Programme). The IOE will provide access to a Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) for the face-to-face and distance learning modules. When you register for the MA in Leadership you shall be entitled to library membership at the Institute and can access materials electronically.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You are eligible for an unconditional offer if you:

- possess a degree equivalent to a UK honours degree or above;

- are an English native speaker OR hold an English Language Qualification;

- have some experience of leadership and management.

If you do not meet these criteria you are usually eligible for a conditional offer (on language, qualifying work or statement of relevant experience). If you are not a native speaker of English you should gain the standard level of English proficiency as stated below:
