Microsoft Surface, Όλα τα reviews και τα hands-on!

Με το λανσάρισμα του Microsoft Surface με Windows RT να απέχει μόλις 2 ημέρες, είναι η κατάλληλη ώρα για τα πρώτα ολοκληρωμένα reviews. Τα μεγαλύτερα τεχνολογικά sites της Αμερικής έλαβαν το συγκεκριμένο δωράκι πριν από αρκετές ημέρες και σήμερα τους επετράπη να δημοσιεύσουν τα video

Σαν γενική εικόνα, μπορούμε να πούμε ότι το Surface δίχασε τους reviewers. Διαβάζουμε στο The Verge ότι το Surface δεν ικανοποιεί ούτε σαν tablet, ούτε σαν laptop και ότι βρίσκεται κάπου ανάμεσα, αλλά δεν ξέρει που ακριβώς. Στο Engadget από την άλλη, θεωρούν ότι το Surface είναι έτοιμο για σκληρή δουλειά και όχι τόσο για μουσικό και gaming, λόγω της έλλειψης εφαρμογών. Το TechCrunch είναι ακόμα πιο σκληρό μαζί του, λέγοντας ότι δεν αξίζει τα λεφτά του, ενώ το Wired το θεωρεί πολύ καλύτερο από τα Android tablets, με προοπτική να ξεπεράσει το iPad.

Στο σύνολο τους τα reviews θεωρώ πως είναι πολύ σκληρά με τα Windows RT και όχι με την ίδια τη συσκευή. Η έλλειψη εφαρμογών είναι κάτι παραπάνω από λογική, αφού μέχρι στιγμής τα νέα Windows δεν έχουν καν κυκλοφορήσει. Οι πρώτοι αγοραστές του θα δυσκολευτούν να βρουν όλες τις αγαπημένες τους εφαρμογές, αλλά σε βάθος χρόνου αυτό θα αλλάξει.

Αν περιμένουμε από κάθε νέο λειτουργικό να μας παρέχει τις ίδιες εφαρμογές με το iOS και το Android, τότε μάλλον θα μείνουμε κολλημένοι σε αυτά τα δύο για πάντα. Και αυτό δεν ταιριάζει στο προφίλ μας.

Where does this one rate? Very well — but very differently. While those devices are primarily targeted at content-hungry consumers, the Surface is a slate upon which you can get some serious work done, and do so comfortably. You can’t always say that of the competition.

Surface RT definitely covers the bases on the industrial-design front. When you set up your workstation at the local café—kickstand kicked, Type Cover snapped—your hardware will strike a pose unlike any other in the tablet space. And in many important ways, Surface RT does successfully redefine what a tablet can be. Its touch gestures rock (once you surmount the learning curve), and its built-in productivity features eclipse anything that the iPad or the Android competition offers.

Maybe I say this too often, but I wanted to love this device. Actually, I wanted to love the Surface when I first saw it, before I even got my hands on the review unit. It made Windows 8 make sense in a way other products had not, and I could see a world where this kind of device was the only one I carried with me. Once I did get the review unit, I wanted to love it even more. And truth be told, there is a lot here to love. Plenty — but not enough for me right now.

Should you buy it? No. The Surface, with an obligatory Touch Cover, is $600. That’s a lot of money. Especially given that it’s no laptop replacement, no matter how it looks or what Microsoft says. It’s a tablet-plus, priced right alongside the iP
