Turkey, Qatar and Libya agreed to establish facilities in the north African country for military training and consultancy in meetings held on Monday, state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Turkey and Qatar will send consultants and military personnel

to Libya to boost the capabilities of forces loyal to the United Nations-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), Anadolu said.

The decision followed a trilateral meeting between Turkey’s Defence Minister Hulusi Akar, his Qatari counterpart Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah and Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, the head of the GNA, in Tripoli.

Turkey and Qatar have been supporting the GNA in its battle against the eastern forces of General Khalifa Haftar, who is backed by Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Russia, among other countries.

Turkey and the GNA signed a similar agreement on security and military cooperation in November, a move that helped the Tripoli government reverse the gains made by Haftar’s 15-month offensive.
