Greece after ordering French Rafales will donnate Mirage 2000-5 to Cyprus

According to information reported by defence editor Kostas Symeonides during the news bulletin of Star TV Greece, Paris is willing to donnate two FREMM class frigates, until the BELAHRA class frigate programme is available and a solution is found in funding

by the Greek government.

However, top priority for the ministry of Defence is considered to be the acquisition of French aircrafts, in particular the fifth generation Rafale. Specificaly, Athens examines the scenario when the Rafales are put into combat readiness with the Hellenic Airforce, some of the Greek Mirage 2000-5 will be offered to Cyprus, and shall be operating from the “Andreas Papandreou” airbase at Pafos.

The journalist mentioned that in a sense such a development would be a revival of the Greece – Cyprus common defence doctrine.

Today, on Wednesday (9/9) the issue of completing the acquisition of state-of-the-art Rafale fighter jets has been put forward during a discussion held between the Greek Defence Minister Nicos Panayotopoulos and his French counterpart Florence Parly.
