Limnos fossilised tree trunks protected as natural monuments

The order identifies the locations in three areas of 2,440, 1,435 and 702 hectares, respectively, and was signed and sent to be published in the Government Gazette as a formal decision.
According to the decision, each fossilised trunk or segment and other fossilised plant parts – including roots, nuts and seeds – will be protected, while the “petrified forest” itself is called “a unique creation

of nature and the country’s heritage, of rare paleontological and geomorphological value.”
The implementation of the decision and the management of the site as a natural monument were assigned to the Lesvos Forests Directorate – where Limnos belongs administratively – while the National History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is designated as scientific associate.
Work for the protection and promotion of the fossil forest can also carried out by the Limnos municipality, after special studies approved by the Lesvos Forests Directorate.
