SYRIZA party leader Alexis Tsipras advised Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and troika to look ‘for accomplices elsewhere,’ commenting on press reports that Greece’s international lenders may ask him to commit himself ahead of elections that he will continue implementing existing policies.
In a
speech to party deputies, he lashed out against the troika’s policies and attacked the government, the banks and the media.
Tsipras appeared confident that polls will be held this year and that the Greek people will be able “to turn around this vicious political scene.”
He also warned of deputies might see themselves expelled if they don't toe the party line, noting that “phenomena that undermine and devalue a group effort are no longer acceptable.”
Regarding recent press speculation that the troika or Merkel might ask him to commit to continuing current bailout programme policies ahead of elections, he said:
“I don’t underestimate the German Chancellor’s intelligence to the extent that I would believe her capable of such nonsense, however I must give a clear answer to those who think that such reports can create dilemmas. If they dare ask us to sign their memoranda, then they will get the same answer as the last time. You should look for accomplices elsewhere. We make promises and we owe only to the Greek people, no one else.”
Regarding the banking sector, he said that the Hellenic Postbank case is the tip of an iceberg.
SYRIZA wants the bad loans of all lenders and the loans given to political parties and the media to be checked and audited, Tsipras said. Regarding New Democracy and PASOK, he said each party has taken loans of 120 million euros.
He also warned that ‘nothing and nobody will be forgotten’ and that “all decisions will be investigated and those responsible for actions resulting in massive losses to the Greek state will be held accountable.”
On the government, he said: “They should not be mistaken, they should not act as if their power will be everlasting and their actions beyond any control’.
