High Winds and Heat Put Greece on 'Extreme' Wildfire Alert

Much of Greece remained on high alert for wildfires on Monday, as a dangerous combination of high temperatures and gale-force winds created “extreme risk” conditions in several parts of the country, disrupting ferry services and stretching firefighting resources.

The Civil Protection authority issued its highest level of alert (Category 5) for the greater Athens region of Attica, the island

of Evia, and the eastern Peloponnese, citing the severe weather.

Many other areas, including the Cyclades islands and Crete, were placed on very high alert.

The strong winds, reaching up to 9 on the Beaufort scale in some sea areas, have forced the cancellation of numerous ferry routes from the mainland ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio to the Aegean islands. The disruptions have created travel chaos at the height of the summer tourist season.

Firefighters across the country are on high alert, having battled dozens of blazes over the weekend.

A fire that broke out Sunday near the coastal town of Nafpaktos in western Greece was reported to be largely contained by Monday morning, though authorities remain vigilant due to the high winds.

Wildfires are a recurring and often devastating scourge in Greece during the hot, dry summer months.

The current conditions have put the entire state mechanism on high alert as the country braces for a difficult period ahead.
