OECD’s Gurria meets with Samaras, Venizelos

Gurria handed over to Samaras the Organisation’s last report on Greece, extolled Greece’s efforts and praised Samaras for his efforts because, as he said, Greece is the first country globally in restructuring reforms.

Later, Gurria also met with government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

Following the meeting, he said that “there is life after debt” and noted that Greece’s

programme is “the most impressive adjustment programme ever undertaken,” underlining the spectacular improvement of the balance of payments, the fiscal situation and the primary surplus.

With his visit, Gurria said, he wanted to assure Greece that the OECD recognizes that the country is working on “the most impressive fiscal adjustment programme ever undertaken” and that it has achieved “an impressive reversal in its balance of payments and its fiscal state, achieving a primary surplus and restoring its competitiveness, lost because of the imbalance between the ratio of wages and productivity.”

Commenting on the OECD report, Venizelos reiterated that Greece’s debt is indeed sustainable and has potential to fall further.
