Greece’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to 49.7 points in March from 51.3 points in February, to the lowest level in 2014, a Markit report said on Tuesday.

The Greek PMI, however, despite its fall in March remained at its highest levels since the third quarter of 2008. The March figures showed a further increase in both production and new orders by Greek

manufacturers, extending a rising trend for the fifth and fourth successive months, respectively.

Employment levels, however, fell further in March, although at the slowest rate since December 2009 with some enterprises raising their workforce to meet rising sales. Pending works’ levels fell for the 69th consecutive month at the fastest rate since October 2013.

The index measures business activity in the manufacturing sector. Readings above 50 indicate a growing sector, while readings below 50 a shrinking sector.
