The Institute of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Helsinki invites applications to FinEdu and Mind the Gap -projects for DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION full-time for one year fixed time period starting from 1.1.2014-31.12.2014 The topic should be related to motivation and well-being in the school context, such as burnout and engagement during educational trajectories. Finnish Educational Transitions (FinEdu) Studies, led by Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro, is acollaborative project by Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies and University of Jyväskylä (funded by the Academy of Finland and the Jacobs Foundation). The aim of this longitudinal study is to investigate the educational transitions of the youth with a special emphasis on the role of personal goals, motivation, and subjective well-being. Mind the Gap -project (2013–2016), led by Professors Kirsti Lonka, Kimmo Alho, Kai Hakkarainen, and Katariina Salmela-Aro, is funded by the Academy of Finland’s Human Mind program. The purpose is to examine the kinds of gaps or discontinuities between the minds of adolescents at the digital age and prevailing educational practices. The project investigates learning and developmentof 12-, 16-, and 20-year-old adolescents. Duties and eligibility of a doctoral student The duties of a doctoral student are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis. The duties also include working in the Mind the Gap and FinEdu -projects. A doctoral student must hold a second-cycle degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in psychology or education or similar fields. Other requirements include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies. Knowledge and skills in statistical methods is an advantage. Salary The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be based on levels 2–3 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.
