Fiat presents the new 500L Beats EditionTM special series and the new 2014 Fiat 500L range, which rationalises the offer with new colours, interior trims and new optionals for new members of the 500 family. What’s more, the start of 2014 sees the affirmation of the new 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II and 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet engines for 500L, the latter also in a dual-fuel (LPG/petrol) version shortly.

The important developments will certainly consolidate the success of the 500 range – 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L Living models – which in Europe in 2013 has soared up the sales rankings to take the top spot in its segment in just a few months, with a share of 17.2%. Moreover, in Italy it was the leader in its segment with a share of 40.9%, in addition to being the top-selling car both among medium-sized and diesel-powered models.

Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM

If the special series of the iconic 500 are a byword for ‘fashion’, those of the 500L start from the world of technology which, according to the Fiat brand, must always feature sophisticated content but be easy to use, to make everyday life simpler and more enjoyable.

The Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM offers a sound system that is revolutionizing the way music can be experienced inside the car. Legendary artist and record producer Dr. Dre and Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman and record producer Jimmy Iovine, worked side by side with Fiat Group sound engineers to develop and calibrate the sound system introduced for the first time last year on the 500L model. The result is a system that offers a listening experience marked by premium sound that only two music experts like Dr. Dre and Iovine could have achieved.

On the outside, the Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM is characterised by the refined two-tone grey/black livery – matt or glossy – enhanced by red and satin chrome elements for a modern, metropolitan look. The same style is found inside, in particular in the distinctive ‘total black’ environment and the new fabric and eco-leather black trim with red stitching.

The new 500L Beats EditionTM special series is on sale starting from this week in the Italian Fiat showrooms and soon in the rest of the Europe.

New 2014 Fiat 500L range

For the launch of the new Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM and new 120 HP engine versions, the 500L model range is getting an update, with a rationalised offer which includes some important new product features, like the brand-new Venezia Blue metallic body colour and the new fabric and leather interiors, as well as new option packages that ensure more and more benefits to those who become part of the 500 family.

Depending on the market where it is sold, the new 2014 Fiat 500L range comprises three trim levels (Pop, Pop Star and Lounge), the 500L Beats EditionTM special series and the Business version dedicated to professionals. What’s more, numerous optionals and accessories are available that, for the customer’s convenience of choice and economic advantage, can also be purchased in specific packs, such as the ‘Pop Star Pack’, ‘Lounge Pack’ and ‘Trekking Pack’.

New 120 HP engine versions for the 500L range

In order to continue in its leading role in the segment, the 500L range too – including the 500L Trekking and 500L Living models, the two developments of the 500′s identity that lead the 500 family to explore new territory, breaking the conventional segment barriers – expands with two new engines: the 1.6 MultiJet II turbodiesel and the 1.4 T-Jet petrol engine.

Both turbocharged and with 120 HP – a section of the market which accounts for up to 16% of sales in the segment in Europe – the two power units share the same winning characteristics: performance when it counts, fun driving in all situations and limited consumption and emissions.

The 1.6 MultiJet II 120 HP is a high-performance engine also marked by fuel economy, ideal for long journeys. Its ‘secret’ lies in the effective combination of advanced engine solutions with Fiat’s proprietary MultiJet II technology. Equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger, developed by Honeywell, the new engine ensures segment-leading performance, as demonstrated by the maximum power of 120 HP at 3,750 rpm, maximum torque of 320 Nm at 1,750 rpm, top speed of 189 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.7″, combined consumption of 4.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 120 g/km.

If efficiency and performance are the watchwords of the 1.6 MultiJet Turbo, the 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet is characterised by reliability, compact dimensions and the optimum balance between outstanding driving and running costs.

Specifically, the 1.4-litre engine is a worthy expression of the concept of ‘downsizing’, thanks to the addition of consolidated, reliable technological solutions such as Fire and Turbo. Today, the more than 500,000 Turbocharged Fire engines produced testify to the success of a technological choice which has become a point of reference in all markets and all applications. With Euro 6 type approval, the 1.4 T-Jet on the Fiat 500L delivers a maximum torque of 215 Nm from as low as 2,500 rpm and enables the 500L to achieve significant performance: maximum power of 120 HP at 5,000 rpm, top speed of 189 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.2″, combined consumption of 6.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 159 g/km.

The extreme versatility of the Fire plus Turbo combination has also permitted the development of a petrol/LPG version of the 1.4 T-Jet, which will be available in the coming weeks on 500L models. In particular, the dual-fuel power unit ensures torque and power on a par with that of the corresponding petrol version, with the addition of the advantages offered by a fuel which represents an effective solution in terms of environmental and financial balance. Additionally, thanks to the adoption of the most advanced technology, the dual-fuel 1.4 T-Jet complies with the strict Euro 6 standard, increases the available range and ensures impressive performance: maximum power of 120 HP at 5,000 rpm, top speed of 189 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.6″, combined consumption of 8.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 144 g/km.

Interestingly, the 1.6 MultiJet II 120 HP fits a small variable geometry turbocharger developed by Honeywell. Leader in manufacturing and technology and one of Fortune’s top 100, Honeywell supplies aerospace products and services, building control technologies for homes and industries, turbochargers and high-performance materials to customers worldwide.

This exclusive service offer is designed to take care of the vehicle throughout its entire useful life, guaranteeing that all maintenance operations are carried out at authorised dealerships and workshops within Europe by highly qualified and specialised technicians, using original parts.

The 500L range heading up the European rankings

In Europe, last year the 500L range has soared up the sales rankings to take the top spot in its segment in just a few months, with a share of 17.2%. Moreover, it was the leader in its segment in Italy, with a share of 40.9%, in addition to being the top-selling car both among medium-sized and diesel-powered models.

A model that wins over customers with varying tastes, cultures and needs, because it always offers functionality, interior space, versatility, but also something more: it’s the only car in its segment to ‘have an inner 500′, to the extent that more than 40% of customers buy the higher-spec versions, the ones with two-tone livery and equipment typical of higher segments. And that’s not all. The 500L Trekking, the ‘coolest’ model in the range, currently represents more than 15% of all sales.

The Fiat 500L is therefore the perfect example to demonstrate how the future of the 500 family lies in its transversal development: in fact, if the 500 is the “cool” city car par excellence, the 500L adds the functionality that makes it unbeatable in day-to-day life and the performance and contents that let it live new experiences outside of the city limits.

The 500 family is also pioneering a new concept of individual mobility, as demonstrated by the largest fleet of cars set aside for car sharing in Italy: more than 640 cars, 500s and 500Ls, cover the streets of Milan every day, in the Enjoy projectcar sharing by ENI in partnership with Fiat – with more than 26,000 people registered who, in the space of a month, have made more than 35,000 journeys.

The new features of the 500L range presented today to the international press will certainly contribute to consolidating the Fiat brand’s path of globalisation, which was undertaken several years ago and reached an important milestone last year. Despite the persisting economic crisis in Europe, and in Italy in particular, the brand maintained its position, registering 573 thousand cars to achieve a share of 4.7%, growth of 0.1 points compared to 2012. This is thanks to the new global approach which has seen growth on all major European markets: for example, sales volumes increased by 9.5% in France in 2013, by 20.2% in the UK and by 28.8% in Spain.

Moving beyond the figures and percentages, 2013 marked an important stage in defining the ‘new Fiat’, and in particular its new international development strategy through two models: the Fiat 500, the icon of the emotional and aspirational brand, and the Fiat Panda, a byword for practicality, simplicity and fun. This resulted in the ’500 and Panda families’, which in 2013 led Fiat to a position of undisputed leadership in the A segment with more than 27% of the share in Europe.

An important result, achieved in part through the excellent commercial performance of the new Panda, which – in its first full year after the range update – is Italy’s best-selling car for the second year running in addition to being second in its segment in Europe, after the Fiat 500. This is thanks to the most extensive and diverse range in the category: it’s the only city car also available with four-wheel drive; the only one to offer the City Brake Control safety system which won it the prestigious ‘Euro NCAP Advance award’; the only one to boast a engine range which stretches from turbodiesel to turbo petrol, from LPG to methane (the TwinAir Turbo Methane was named ‘Best Green Engine of the Year 2013′).

The new Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM is a special series created with Beats By Dr. Dre, the brand that in the wake of its success in the USA is rapidly establishing itself in Europe.

At the top of the 500L range owing to its wealth of features and distinctive and metropolitan look, the new car was created on the basis of the Fiat 500L Trekking, a development of the 500 family with two perfectly fused souls which love to play off one another every day: one metropolitan, for breezing through the city, and one more adventurous, perfect for those little weekend emotions that make life worth living.

Compared to the 500L Trekking model, the Fiat 500L Beats Edition further enhances its ‘urban’ soul by offering the perfect combination of technology and a metropolitan look. BeatsAudioTM premium signature sound will certainly win over the most demanding music lovers.

Exteriors

The Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM features a refined two-tone livery that, according to the market, may be grey body/black roof, both with matte paint, or black/grey or grey/black with glossy paint.

All three colour combinations are elegantly embellished with several satin chrome accents – mirror fairings, front ‘whiskers’ and tailgate handle- and other parts painted matteblack: from wings, skirts and 17″ alloy wheels to the front and rear bumpers.

The Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM completes its look with a red insert on the mirror fairings and brake calipers, also red, in addition to the distinctive all-terrain look teamed with a high ride and specially designed bumpers with protective shield

Interiors

The same style, which evokes the fusion of technology and metropolitan look, is to be found inside, where the matte grey dashboard and dedicated Total Black trim level stand out. More specifically, the seats are upholstered in a special black fabric/eco-leather enhanced by the red of the stitching and the ’500′ logo on the front backrest.

Signature Beats Sound System The Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM offers a sound system that is revolutionizing the way music can be experienced inside the car.

In particular, the BeatsAudioTM system boasts 520 W of total power, divided between two 80 W (Ø 165 mm) mid-woofer speakers placed in the lower part of the front door panel; two 40 W (Ø 38 mm) tweeter speakers placed in the upper part of the front door panel; two 60 W (Ø 165 mm) full-range speakers placed in the rear door panel; and one 80 + 80 W (Ø 165 mm) subwoofer located in the boot – in place of the spare wheel in order to not reduce loading capacity – which ensures dynamic and powerful bass and maximises the listening experience across a wide range of music genres, from hip hop to soul. The BeatsAudioTM system is complete with an amplifier with DSP and 8 channels that integrate an advanced equalisation algorithm, recreating the sound spectrum that only an artist experiences during studio recordings.

Engine versions

The Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM is available with two petrol engines – 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet and 105 HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo – and two turbodiesel engines: 105 HP 1.6 MultiJet II and 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II. Among the engines that best demonstrate the metropolitan spirit of the new special series, the 1.6 MultiJet II – in both power versions – definitely stands out. Thanks to a torque which is already high at low engine speeds, it proves a highly flexible engine which is therefore ideal for every situation and every road.

Traction +

The Fiat 500L Beats EditionTM offers as standard smart front-wheel drive with Traction+ technology which, together with Mud and Snow “snowflake” tyres (also as standard), improves the vehicle’s handling on terrain with poor grip. All of this without compromising on the space and functionality of the 500L, the Fiat City Lounge designed to accommodate life’s little pleasures and greatest joys all together – children, friends, travelling – thanks to its 3.17 m3 of passenger volume and a spacious, regular-shaped luggage compartment offering no fewer than 455 litres.

New 120 HP engine versions for the 500L range

Fuel consumption of 4.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions equal to 120 g/kmSmall variable geometry turbocharger developed by HoneywellReliability and low running costs with the new 120 HP 1.4 T-JetIt combines consolidated Fire and Turbo technologies that ensure performance (189 km/h), reduced consumption (6.9 l/100 km) and no compromise on fun drivingNew 120 HP 1.4 Turbo LPG: the ‘green’ engine that ensures the same performance characteristics (120 HP at 5,000 rpm) and torque (215 Nm at 1,750 rpm) as the petrol engine is arriving

Both turbocharged and with 120 HP – a section of the market which accounts for up to 16% of total sales in the segment in Europe – the two power units share the same winning characteristics: performance when it counts, fun driving in all situations and limited consumption and emissions.

In the city but also for long trips, for work or for leisure, alone or together with family and friends. Also thanks to the new engines, today the Fiat 500L can meet all the needs of its market in terms of power, performance and efficiency with an offer that will grow again in the coming weeks with the arrival of LPG on the 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet engine. In short, with the introduction of these new engines into its range, the 500L confirms its ability to deliver “more with less”: more choice, more performance and more eco-friendliness with lower fuel consumption and running costs.

New 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II

The range of the 500L, 500 Trekking and 500L Living models has grown with the new 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II engine that ensures excellent dynamic performance with low emissions and fuel consumption. What’s more, just like other diesel versions, the 1.6 MultiJet II requires routine servicing every 35,000 km (or every two years) to be kept in perfect working order.

The adoption of a small variable geometry turbocharger – developed by Honeywell -

means high torque delivery at low rpm (320 Nm at 1,750 rpm) and maximum running flexibility. But the heart of the 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II engine is without a doubt the third-generation Common Rail injection system, which uses innovative injectors to control the amount of diesel injected into the combustion chamber with utmost precision, with a particularly quick and flexible injection sequence thanks to the balanced hydraulic servo valve.

In detail, the new injectors can manage up to eight injections per cycle and actuate increasingly advanced strategies focused on optimising the combustion, such as the Injection Rate Shaping (IRS) system which involves two consecutive injections so close together in time as to generate a continuous and modulated fuel supply into the cylinders. Thanks to this method, the combustion process is improved, all to the benefit of quieter operation and particulate and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Furthermore, the new injection system is even simpler and more reliable because the injectors have a simpler structure with 40 per cent fewer components.

Combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II engine offers a range of features to save fuel and cut emissions. These include a smart alternator that recovers energy while coasting and stores it in the battery, engine cooling circuit optimisation that reduces the warm-up time and a variable displacement oil pump that adjusts the oil pressure in the most appropriate way, reducing the power consumed by the pump. Naturally the Start&Stop system is included, while the engine and transmission use low viscosity lubricant oil to minimise friction.

The exhaust gas treatment system implements close-coupled DPF technology which efficiently integrates the oxidising catalytic converter and the particulate filter (CCDPF). The component is compact to reduce exhaust counter-pressure with beneficial effects in terms of fuel reduction and CO2 emissions. The particulate trap is arranged close to the turbocharger outlet to provide hotter gas temperatures on average near the particulate filter. This reduces the amount of diesel fuel needed for regeneration.

Furthermore, the fact that the two components are integrated reduces the weight of the exhaust system and improves global efficiency. The CCDPF is combined with an advanced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, in which all sub-components are grouped in a single very small sized element (EGR module).

Interestingly, the small-size variable geometry turbocharger was developed by Honeywell Turbo Technologies, a major automotive turbocharger and technological solution supplier to the most important international car and lorry makers for over 60 years. The company’s technological range includes innovations for diesel, petrol, natural gas and hybrid engines worldwide.

The Turbo Technologies division is part of Honeywell Transportation Systems, which also includes Honeywell Friction Materials, the global leader in friction materials for automotive brakes. Honeywell Transportation Systems improves vehicle performance, efficiency and appearance by supplying state-of-the-art technologies, first class brands and bespoke global solutions for the world’s automotive industry.

New 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet

The offer of the 500 family, with the 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L Living models, has been expanded with the outstanding 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet engine. It is marked by reliability, a compact size and excellent balancing between spirited driving and running costs. Concrete expression of the ‘downsizing’ concept, the 1.4-litre engine includes technological technology solutions such as the consolidated Fire and the Turbo that ensure the best performance, reduced consumption and no compromise on ‘fun to drive’.

Today, the more than 500,000 Turbocharged Fire engines produced testify to the success of a technological choice which has become a point of reference in all markets and all applications. On the 1.4 T-Jet engine, the Fire combines with a low-inertia turbocharger that allows excellent performance even at low rpm (215 Nm at 2,500 rpm) without the annoying lag typical of this type of engine. In this way the behaviour of the car is equal to that possible with naturally aspirated engines of larger displacement but with significantly lower fuel consumption achieved through more efficient operation of the engine.

In detail, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine develops 120 HP (88 kW) of maximum power achieved at 5,000 rpm and it has a max torque of 215 Nm at 2,500 rpm. This ensures high driving flexibility, reduced use of the gearbox and great response. This is aided by the low inertia of the turbocharger, which makes it possible to obtain maximum performance from a throttle command, without the annoying lag typical of this type of engine. So the figures are great: for example, the Fiat 500L records a top speed of 189 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10.2 seconds.

Combined with a six-speed gearbox, the engine is ideal for those in search of a car that can handle city traffic effortlessly while keeping running costs to a minimum. Not to mention that – like all other 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L Living petrol engines – the 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet is already compliant with the Euro 6 emissions standard, with recorded consumption and emissions values in the combined cycle of 6.9 l/100 km and 159 g/km of CO2 respectively. In addition, the engine boasts fantastic reliability as the scheduled servicing interval of 30,000 km shows, without any need for intermediate servicing.

A computerised engine control system manages all functions by means of sophisticated mathematical algorithms. The accelerator control is ‘drive-by-wire’, without any manual connection so that the driver can obtain the desired response from the engine, relaxed or sporting, always with maximum energy efficiency.

These excellent results were made possible by the careful design and development of all engine components, and the most modern computer-assisted design tools and calculations were used to simulate the severest turbocharger stress conditions.

And that’s not all. The main components were designed right from the development stage to guarantee the highest performance levels of a modern turbocharged engine, both in terms of resilience to mechanical stress as well as to guarantee safe and enjoyable behaviour on the road. Particular attention was paid to fluid dynamics and combustion in order to minimise power loss, thus increasing efficiency, and to reach high levels of performance with limited fuel consumption and emissions.

New 120 HP 1.4 Turbo Petrol LPG

In the coming weeks you will be able to order the new dual-fuel (LPG/Petrol) version of the 500L and Fiat 500L Trekking. Use of the latest technology has allowed us to comply with the strict Euro 6 standard, increase the available range and ensure performance very similar to the petrol version: maximum power of 120 HP at 5.000 rpm, a top speed of 189 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.6″, combined consumption of 8.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 144 g/km. This performance goes hand in hand with a much lower operating cost due to the use of a fuel far cheaper than petrol or diesel.

Unlike an aftermarket conversion, the 120 HP 1.4 LPG Turbo engine has been totally redesigned for integration with the LPG system by using specific materials and components and applying dedicated technology. In detail, this engine has valves and valve seats with configurations and materials specially designed for LPG operation. It is equipped with a special intake system and all the additional electrical wiring already built-in.

What’s more, for this engine Fiat has developed a brand-new single control unit able to manage both types of fuel. Obviously, in order to attain ultimate quality and reliability, the LPG system is factory-fitted. Each car is certified, tested and guaranteed by Fiat and, as such, can take advantage of the government incentive schemes in various European countries.

The Fiat 500L Turbo LPG always starts up on petrol and switches automatically to LPG when optimal conditions are achieved (engine water temperature, minimum engine rpm threshold). It is of course possible to switch from one fuel to another whilst driving by pressing a special button built into the dashboard on the central tunnel. If the driver finishes the LPG inside the tank, switching to petrol operation is automatic to ensure a smooth drive.

The toroid (ring-shaped) LPG tank has a 38-litre capacity and is located in a compartment within the luggage compartment without taking any space away from luggage. To refuel, the gas filler (complete with ‘check’ valve) is located next to the petrol filler and the filling cost in Italy is equal to about 30 euros, allowing the total range of the car to be extended to 1,400 km on extra-urban routes. The LPG tank is certified according to current legislation in order to ensure maximum safety in all environmental and operating conditions.

With LPG, the car can travel in areas where petrol and diesel vehicles are forbidden, and in more general terms, on days when environmental traffic restrictions are in force. Furthermore, there are reductions on the Provincial Transcription Tax (IPT) and on road tax payment in some Italian provinces. Compared with petrol and diesel fuel, LPG cuts particulate emissions to zero and slashes the emission of other pollutant substances (up to 15% less carbon dioxide, up to 20% less carbon monoxide and up to 60% less unburnt hydrocarbons). Finally, the distribution network is also widespread throughout Europe, with more than 10,000 points of sale.
