Activision Job Listing Points to Work on Games for 'Next Gen Platforms'

Is the next Call of Duty going next-gen?

E3 2018 saw the reveal of what are probably the first three next-gen games–Starfield, The Elder Scrolls 6, and Halo: Infinite–and now a fourth may have emerged. An Infinity Ward job listing first reported by

Charlie Intel references a "new, exciting, unannounced title for multiple next-gen platforms."

The job listing is for a temporary narrative scripter to work on what is almost certainly a future Call of Duty game. Infinity Ward appears to be looking for someone to help keep Call of Duty's long-standing commitment to spectacular set pieces alive, as evidenced through multiple references to "cinematic" work in the job listing.

The listing also mentions "a broad understanding of both multiplayer and single-player game design" as being important. While this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is abandoning the traditional shooter campaign, it still features solo missions.

Along with Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games, Infinity Ward is one of the three developers publisher Activision alternates between on annual Call of Duty games. With this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 being handled by Treyarch and last year's Call of Duty: WWII having been developed by Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward is ostensibly due to release the inevitable–but currently unannounced–2019 Call of Duty game.

There's certainly no requirement holding Activision to that pattern, however, and 2019 would be surprisingly early for a next-gen game. Activision could also potentially opt to release its 2019 Call of Duty game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and port it over to their successors once they launch at a later date.

The next-gen Xbox is reportedly codenamed Scarlet and set to launch in 2020. No such rumors have emerged for the PlayStation 5, but in May Sony said the PlayStation 4 was entering the final phase of its lifecycle.
