Turkey’s new Akinci drone passes latest test

The third prototype of Turkey’s Akıncı drone has passed its latest test, Daily Sabah newspaper cited Selçuk Bayraktar, chief technology officer of drone-manufacturer Baykar Makina, as saying on Monday.

The new drone passed the “Medium Altitude System Identification Test,” Bayraktar said, adding that mass production of the domestically made unmanned combat aerial vehicle

Akıncı is expected to enter the Turkish security forces’ inventory this year, the newspaper said.

Turkey is becoming a major player in drone-technology and supplies in countries where it maintains military involvement such as Syria, Libya and the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The country also uses drones in its own fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) inside and outside Turkey’s borders.

Recently Turkish drones were spotted in Ukraine’s Donbass region, where tensions with Russia have been on the rise in recent weeks, prompting fears of a revival of the military conflict.

Russia on Monday warned Turkey not to provoke Ukraine by selling weapons to the country.
