of Cyprus signed a memorandum on the construction of a power line that will connect the electricity networks of the three countries.

In accordance with the agreement signed by the representatives of the three countries in Nicosia, the line, which is approximately one thousand 208 kilometers long, is planned to be delivered to the Greek island of Crete via Nicosia. The Israel-Nicosia leg of the line will be 310 kilometers and the Nicosia-Crete leg will be 898 kilometers.

It is stated that the project named “EuroAsia Interconnector”, which is considered as an important step in terms of Israel’s energy security, will be the longest and deepest underground electricity connection in the world.

Reserve electricity supply to Israel

Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, who went to Nicosia to sign the memorandum, stated that the line to be established is planned to be used as a reserve electricity source in emergencies, “The cable to be installed will provide electricity from the European continent in emergencies and reduce our dependence on solar energy production.”

EU member Republic of Cyprus Energy Minister Natasa Pilidu said that the project is an important step in ending the island’s isolation in energy and its dependence on heavy fuels.

Planned to be completed by 2024

Cyprus state television RIK stated that if everything goes as planned, the line will be completed in 2023 and the EU Commission, which approved the project in 2016, will contribute $ 769 million to the construction process. The total cost of the project is expected to be around $ 900 million.

The Israeli Ministry of Energy stated that the project is expected to be completed by 2024 and will have a capacity of 1000-2000 megawatts (MW). The ministry noted that the line, which will be built with a length of 1,500 kilometers and a maximum depth of 2,700 meters, will be the longest and deepest underwater cable in the world.
