Pompeo: Senior Russian officials likely ordered Navalny poisoning

The poisoning of Russian opposition figurehead Alexei Navalny has likely been ordered by senior officials in Moscow, US State Secretary Mike Pompeo said Wednesday.

‘We’ll do our best to come to a conclusion about who was responsible,’ Pompeo says.

There is a “substantial chance” this scenario is true, Pompeo asserted in an interview with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, adding that the US was considering options

Pompeo said that Washington had told Moscow it was expecting it to conduct a thorough probe into the attack and bring those responsible to justice.

“We’ll do our best to come to a conclusion about who was responsible too,” he added.

Germany and NATO said they were certain that Navalny, who was hospitalized in late August and flown out of Russia to Berlin, had been poisoned with a Novichok-type nerve agent.

Earlier this week, the Berlin doctors brought Navalny out of the medically-induced coma, his press secretary saying he now reacted to the sounds of people’s voices.

However, the long-term effects of the “severe poisoning” were yet to be established, the medics said.

Alexei Navalny is head of the Fighting Corruption Foundation — a Russian NGO publishing scoops on corruption among Russian higher-ups.

His work exposed under-the-radar riches of many high-profile Russian officials, but also earned him enemies in Kremlin.
