Inauguration of Port of Copenhagen’s new onshore power facility

On 2 June 2025, CINEA attended the inauguration of the EU funded ‘coordinated supply of onshore power in Baltic seaports’ project of the Connecting Europe Facility Transport (CEF Transport) programme.

The ceremony took place in Copenhagen port in the presence of His Majesty The King of Denmark, the European

Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jorgensen, and the Danish Minister of Transport, Thomas Danielsen.

The new onshore power facility in Copenhagen port, co-financed by the EU, is the largest in Europe. The facility will be able to supply electricity to cruise ships docking at Oceankaj and Langelinie terminals, and to ferries docking at Sondre Frihavn. The CEF Transport project also constructed onshore power facilities for ships in the Baltic ports of Aarhus in Denmark, and Stockholm in Sweden.

To reduce the impact of maritime transport on the environment, connecting vessels to the electricity grid when ships are moored in the port is a one mature solution to help avoid emissions. These onshore power supply facilities enable vessels to cover their electricity demand by green electricity while being alongside berth in the port instead of using onboard engines running on fossil fuels. They will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutants, and noise in the area. At the port of Copenhagen: nearly 18.000 tonnes of CO2 emissions equivalent will be saved per year through 17.000 tonnes CO2 equivalent saved for cruise ships at Oceankaj and Langelinie terminals and 1.000 tonnes CO2 equivalent saved at Sondre Frihavn site. Across the three Baltic ports, the project will save nearly 29.000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.

The project was implemented with 20% co-financing from the CEF Transport programme. The total EU grant amounts to €11 million and the total project is €52 million, with the following breakdown for CEF Transport financing:

Copenhagen: €6.6 millionAarhus: €1.4 millionStockholm: €2.3 million

The Baltic ports that are part of the project are strategically connected via the Scandinavian – Mediterranean core network corridor. They are frequently visited by passenger vessels (more than 800 calls per year) and provide high frequent RoPax ferry connections (about 200 calls per week) between the European mainland and peripheral Scandinavia.

Background

European ports are the gateway for the movement of goods to and from the EU, the starting point for people taking a cruise, and a critical node for connecting islands. Ports – like Copenhagen – are the heart and lifeline of entire cities and communities. However, maritime transport exerts pressure on the environment and represents a significant challenge the efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions. Shipping accounts today for approximately 3% of the EU’s total CO2 emissions and their successful reduction is therefore key to achieving the climate targets. CEF Transport is funding projects to make the maritime sector greener and more sustainable.
