Private Onassis island of Scorpios to be sold?

Athina Onassis – the only surviving descendant of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and the sole heir of Aristotle’s daughter Christina Onassis, who inherited 55% of his fortune – is reportedly in talks to sell Scorpios, the private Onassis island hideaway.

Reports in

the Greek press suggest Athina Onassis is selling the Ionian Sea island to a Russian tycoon and that the contracts are currently being written up by two major law firms, one based in Geneva and the other in Athens.

This isn’t the first time reports suggest Scorpios is about to be sold by Athina Onassis as she rarely visits the fabled private Onassis island of Scorpios. For Onassis watchers and the media there was widespread speculation if this was to be the end of the Onassis legacy.

The cost of maintaining Scorpios, the reluctance of the heiress and her husband to visit the family island, and her past liquidation of hallmark Onassis properties and valuables indicates for some media that it would only be a matter of time before Athina put Scorpios on the block.
