New decision on Zakynthos landfills expected by European Court on Feb. 6

A control team from the regional environmental protection of the Zakynthos region conducted a second on-site examination at the landfill site at Skopos on the Ionian Island, confirming that problems there too serious and will be difficult to be resolved.
According to information by the agency that handles solid waste on the island, both of the new landfills have reached capacity and cannot be restored due to lack of funding. Therefore there is a plan to include the project under the new programming period of 2014-2020.
Greece has been fined by the European Court on the issue of landfills in Zakynthos; the court is expected to issue a new decision on the same issue on February 6.
