Οι ισχυρές εκρήξεις ενδέχεται να οφείλονται σε «εκρηκτικές ύλες» που είχαν κατασχεθεί και φυλάσσονταν «εδώ και χρόνια» σε μια αποθήκη, εκτιμά ένας υψηλόβαθμο στέλεχος των υπηρεσιών ασφαλείας του Λιβάνου.

«Φαίνεται ότι υπήρχε μια αποθήκη που περιείχε υλικά τα οποία είχαν κατασχεθεί εδώ και χρόνια και φαίνεται ότι επρόκειτο για άκρως εκρηκτικές ύλες», είπε ο γενικός διευθυντής της Γενικής Ασφάλειας, Αμπάς Ιμπραχίμ, όταν ρωτήθηκε

από δημοσιογράφους της τηλεόρασης ενώ κατευθυνόταν στο σημείο της καταστροφής.
