Power outages are continuing on Santorini - one of the top tourist destinations in Europe - following a fire that destroyed generators on August 13, while the prime minister has ordered Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis to the island to sort out the issue.

The
Public Power Corporation (PPC) and its subsidiary supplier as well as authorities on the island had assessed that power would be mostly restored by evening August 14, with the arrival of auxiliary generators from Piraeus and other islands.

Hindering efforts were a new breakdown in a condenser of electricity, rough seas due to high winds and the difficulty of transporting and setting up the generators, the first shipment of which weighed upwards of 500 tonnes and needed a crane, also sent to the island by ship, to be set up.

The outage has affected all of Santorini (also known as Thira) and the islet of Thirasia, with intermittent service provided the last few days and pleas by authorities to consumers to restrict power usage so more households can be served.

Minister Michelakis is on the island already, while Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni is expected on Friday.
