Over a tonne of heroin seized in joint Greek-US operation; shipowner arrested

Greek authorities, in cooperation with the United States' Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), have seized one of the largest heroin hauls ever found in Europe, with an estimated street value of roughly 30 million euros, the Greek Coastguard announced on Friday. The announcement was made in a press conference to present the results of a large-scale police operation carried out in two districts in greater Athens on Thursday night.
Over a tonne of heroin, 1,133.420 kilos in 443 plastic parcels, was found in a warehouse in Koropi and in the house of a shipowner in Filothei, where police found 500 kilos of the drug. The shipowner allegedly owns four oil tankers in Dubai.
A total of 11 people were arrested, including six Greek nationals, one of them a minor, and five Turkish nationals. All suspects will be led before a prosecutor later in the afternoon. Among those arrested are the shipowner, his ex-wife and his underage son.
