Five arrests at antifascist rallies on Wed. night

Five persons were arrested and 62 others were taken in for questioning during antifascist rallies and demonstrations held in downtown Athens on Wednesday evening.

Violence erupted during an antifascist rally in central Athens Syntagma square and a march to the ultra-right Golden Dawn party offices on Mesogion Ave. that had been called by Greece's umbrella employees' unions, ADEDY for civil servants and GSEE for the private sector.

Protesters threw stones and firebombs against police blocking the way to the Golden Dawn offices, with police responding with tear gas and stun grenades.

Addressing the gathering, trade unionists condemned fascism and its inroads in society, and spoke about the significance of worker solidarity. A concert followed with performances by a variety of artists.
