Storms, Meltemi Winds to Disrupt Greece’s Early September Heatwave

Greece’s early September heatwave is set to ease Wednesday night as thunderstorms and northerly meltemi winds sweep across much of the country, bringing cooler temperatures and gusts up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean by Friday.

Local rain and isolated thunderstorms were forecast mainly over mountainous zones in Macedonia, Epirus, western Sterea, the Peloponnese and the Ionian islands.

Dust concentrations in the atmosphere would be relatively elevated, particularly over the mainland and Ionian, with locally reduced visibility until morning.

Temperatures were expected to range from 19–32°C in western Macedonia, 18–35°C in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace, 19–37°C in Thessaly, 21–34°C in Epirus, 21–38°C in Sterea and the Peloponnese, 23–35°C in the Ionian islands, 16–35°C in the north and east Aegean, 21–32°C in the Cyclades, 23–33°C in the Dodecanese and 18–33°C in Crete.

In Attica, sunshine is forecast with northerly winds at 2–4 Beaufort, strengthening to 3–5 from morning to afternoon.

Temperatures in central Athens were expected to reach 27–36°C. In Thessaloniki, local clouds would thicken at times, with a chance of brief showers from the afternoon. Winds would be variable up to 3 Beaufort, shifting southerly 2–4 at midday and afternoon. Temperatures in the city center would range 26–33°C.

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis said a cold air mass from the northern Balkans would begin moving south Wednesday night, affecting northern Greece first with heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible hail. Instability was expected to peak Thursday, spreading to Central Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Sterea and inland Peloponnese.

Attica is not expected to be significantly affected.

From Friday, storms would gradually subside, but meltemi winds in the Aegean were forecast to strengthen to 7–8 Beaufort, bringing a noticeable temperature drop and a more autumnal feel, though not signaling the end of summer.
