German outlets including Reisereporter and Greece Moments have recently featured western Samos, highlighting the Potami region near Karlovasi for its pebble beaches and forest trails, and Mount Kerkis — one of the Aegean's highest peaks — as a serious destination for hiking and mountain tourism.

The media attention follows a targeted push by Samos municipalities at the ITB Berlin 2026 international tourism fair, where local officials held talks with representatives from Lufthansa and Discover Airlines about extending the flight season and adding direct routes from additional German cities.

"Our region offers a unique combination of nature, culture, and authenticity," said Vangelis Marnezos, deputy mayor for tourism of West Samos.

Mr. Marnezos said that in a climate of global uncertainty, actively promoting the island's distinct identity has become a necessity rather than an option, adding that Samos possesses the raw ingredients to become a leading model of sustainable tourism development.

The island's strategy reflects a broader shift in traveler preferences, accelerated by the overtourism backlash affecting Mykonos, Santorini and other high-profile Aegean destinations.
