Panathinaikos Owner Banned 10 Months from Arenas After Finals Incident

Panathinaikos BC owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos has been banned from entering sports venues for 10 months and fined 20,000 euros ($21,700) for actions deemed to have damaged the image of Greek basketball.

The disciplinaryruling follows an incident during the second game of the leaguefinals against archrival Olympiakos

on June 1.

The ban, effectiveimmediately, was issued by the league’s sports judge who cited"repeated conduct that defames the sport."

This means Mr.Giannakopoulos will not be allowed to attend Game 3 at OAKA, or apotential Game 5 if the finals series continues.

In addition to thepersonal sanction against Mr. Giannakopoulos, Panathinaikos BC itselfwas fined 44,000 euros ($47,700) for his actions during the heatedencounter at Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF).

Further disciplinaryactions were handed down, with head coach Ergin Ataman receiving awritten reprimand and a 5,000 euro ($5,400) fine for post-gamecomments that were found to have defamed the sport.

Guard Kostas Sloukaswas fined 1,100 euros ($1,200) for inappropriate behavior toward areferee. Players Mathias Lessort and Ioannis Papapetrou were clearedof similar accusations regarding referee and fan interactions,respectively.

The rulings comeamid rising tensions in the Greek league finals between longtimerivals Panathinaikos and Olympiakos.
