New Traffic Enforcement System Targeting Red-Light Violations to Launch in Athens

A sophisticated traffic camera system will be fully activated in the coming days to enforce red-light violations at major Athens intersections, the Ministry of Transport has said.

This measuredirectly targets a leading cause of traffic accidents in the country.

Minister ofTransport Konstantinos Kyranakis stated that an initial eight camerasare already in place for a pilot run, with a total of 388 planned forintersections identified as high-risk for accidents and violations.

The cameras areequipped with high-resolution sensors and advanced software, enablingthem to detect vehicles with 99% accuracy in all light conditions.

Upon detecting aviolation, the system captures five photographs and transmits theencrypted data to a central violation management server. The HellenicPolice will have exclusive access to this server for verification.

Followingconfirmation of a violation, the system automatically generates afine and delivers it to the vehicle owner’s digital inbox on thegov.gr portal. A violations registry will also be created to trackrepeat offenders.

The updated trafficcode stipulates a €700 fine and a 60-day license suspension forrunning a red light. The penalty increases to €1,000 and a 180-daysuspension for a second offense within five years, and to €2,000and a one-year suspension for a third offense.

The governmentanticipates this initiative will lead to a marked improvement in roadsafety.
