Mitsotakis' Ruling Party Holds Double-Digit Lead Over Tsipras' New Party, Poll Shows

Greece's governing New Democracy party maintains a commanding double-digit lead over former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's newly formed Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), according to a poll published Tuesday, as speculation builds over the timing of the next general election.

The Interview survey, conducted

for Political newspaper, found that New Democracy, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, would win 30.1% of the vote if elections were held now, compared with 17.4% for Mr. Tsipras's ELAS. The center-left PASOK party placed third at 12.3%, followed by the populist right-wing Greek Solution at 8.8%.

Hope for Democracy, a party founded this spring by rail safety activist Maria Karystianou, slipped to fifth place with 7.4% support, according to the poll.

Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to call parliamentary elections in the first half of 2027 as he seeks a third term in office.

Mr. Tsipras first became prime minister in 2015, at the height of Greece's debt crisis, leading the leftist SYRIZA party on a pledge to end austerity measures tied to the country's international bailout programs. He ultimately signed onto further austerity cuts instead. After a string of electoral defeats to Mr. Mitsotakis, Mr. Tsipras left SYRIZA to launch ELAS. SYRIZA, now without its founding leader, is projected to win just 0.7% of the vote, according to the same poll.

The survey underscores the fragmented state of Greece's political opposition heading into the next electoral cycle, with no single rival party posing a significant challenge to Mr. Mitsotakis's governing majority.
