Kyranakis presents measures under consideration to reduce fatalities on the road

Alternate Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis on Wednesday referred to a package of measures aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and enhancing road safety, such as considering the 24-hour operation of metro and tram lines along the Athens coastal road

every Saturday, for example, in an interview with OPEN TV.

He specifically emphasised the idea of 24-hour operation of the metro on Saturday for the safe transportation of the citizens at night.

Kyranakis revealed that Urban Rail Transport (STASY) was asked to prepare a relevant sustainability study four weeks ago, while a similar request has been made for the tram service on the coast during the summer months, where there is increased traffic. At the same time, the deputy minister referred to a proposal to subsidise night-time taxi rides, which caused reactions. “The issue is very serious,” he stressed, explaining that “while a great effort has been made, deaths have unfortunately increased on Greek roads in 2024.” According to the data he presented, road fatalities for 2024 amounted to 656 incidents.
