Greek Ruling Party Keeps Poll Lead as Two-Thirds of Households Struggle With Costs

Greece's governing New Democracy party has kept a double-digit lead in a new opinion poll, even as nearly two-thirds of Greeks say they struggle to make ends meet, underscoring the cost of living as the defining issue ahead of elections expected next spring.

The GPO poll for news

website iefimerida.gr estimated New Democracy's support at 29.4%. Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' new party, ELAS, was second at 15.7%, followed by the center-left PASOK at 13.1%.

The Communist Party had 9.4% and the nationalist Greek Solution 8.5%.

Hope for Democracy, led by Maria Karystianou, who heads a group of relatives of victims of Greece's deadliest rail disaster, would fall short of the 3% threshold to enter parliament, at 2.6%.

High prices were the top concern for 64% of respondents.

Only 5.9% said they live comfortably and can save, while 66% said they struggle to cover their needs, including 5.9% who cannot meet even basic needs.

Two-thirds said they find it hard to pay for fuel and heating oil.

"The cost of living is the main lens through which citizens judge the political system," said Antonis Papargyris, GPO's research director.

Mr. Papargyris said most voters believed no party had a realistic economic plan.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis remained the top choice for prime minister at 28.5%, ahead of Mr. Tsipras at 14.8% and PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis at 9.4%.

Support for single-party rule rose to 52.7%, even if it requires repeat elections.

A possible new party led by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras drew 3.2% of definite support, with a potential pool of 10.5%.
