Greek Poll Shows Ruling Party Comfortably Ahead as Parliament Could Splinter Into 10 Parties

Greece's governing New Democracy party holds a 13.5-point lead over former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' new party, according to a poll released this week that also points to a fragmented parliament of up to 10 parties after elections expected next spring.

The Pulse

poll for Skai television estimated support for New Democracy at 30%, ahead of Mr. Tsipras' ELAS at 16.5% and the center-left PASOK at 13%.

Four smaller parties hovered between 3% and 4%, around the threshold needed to enter parliament.

They are Hope for Democracy, the far-right Alliance of Greeks, which is backed by jailed former Golden Dawn lawmaker Ilias Kasidiaris, the nationalist Voice of Reason and Yanis Varoufakis' left-wing MeRA25.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis remained voters' top choice for prime minister at 29%, followed by Mr. Tsipras at 16% and "none" at 11%. PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis had 8%.

Asked what kind of government they want, 43% favored single-party rule and 36% a coalition.

Interest in a possible new party led by former conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras slipped.

Its potential support fell to 5% from 6% in September, while 63% said they would never vote for it. Mr. Samaras drew 14% potential support among disaffected New Democracy voters but only 2% among those who intend to vote for the party.

The poll is one of several this week showing New Democracy firmly in first place but short of the roughly 38% to 40% typically needed to win an outright majority under Greece's electoral system.
