Greece on High Alert as "Very High" Fire Risk Looms for Friday

Greek authorities have placed several regions, including the wider Athens area of Attica, on a "very high" fire risk alert for Friday, ordering increased readiness of all state emergency services.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, has activated a full operational plan in response to the forecast.

The measures include continuous aerial surveillance, the doubling of fire patrols, and the deployment of military equipment to high-risk areas.

The Category 4 alert, the second-highest level, also affects large parts of the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, and the island of Crete.

The ministry said the proactive steps are necessary to prevent and swiftly respond to any potential wildfires during a challenging summer season.
