Greece, Israel Partner on Autonomous Underwater Defense System

Greek and Israeli defense industries have reached a new milestone in their cooperation with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB) during the Defense Exhibition Expo of Athens (DEFEA), which took place

May 6-8.

The agreementconcerns “BlueWhale,” an autonomous underwater system developedby Israel.

Offered to theHellenic Navy, the system is capable of a range of covert maritimemissions, including surface intelligence gathering, submarine andunderwater target detection, acoustic intelligence collection, andseabed minefield detection.

According to thedeal, Greece will play a key role in the production and technologicaladvancement of the BlueWhale platform. In addition to itscontribution to the project, Hellenic Aerospace will also benefitfrom direct access to Israeli defense technology, considered amongthe most advanced globally.

The agreementbetween the Greek and Israeli defense industries includesopportunities for technology transfer between the two countries andactive involvement in future joint projects.

The “BlueWhale”is an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) measuring 10.9 meters inlength, with a diameter of 1.12 meters and a total weight of 5.5tons.

This cooperationunderscores Greece’s ambition to enhance its domestic defensemanufacturing capabilities while strengthening its security alliancewith Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
