Driven Out by Bullying: Family Abandons Rural Relocation Dream for New Life in Naxos

A highly publicized attempt by a large family to build a new life in a remote Greek village has collapsed, with the parents citing severe, protracted school bullying and a failed business

Stefanos Kostopoulos and Vaso Emmanouil filed a formal complaint with the Karpenisi Secondary Education Directorate in June 2026, detailing 18 months of physical and verbal abuse against their children.

Mrs. Emmanouil said their 16-year-old son, Vangelis, was repeatedly targeted with beatings, derogatory slurs, and had stinging nettles thrown at him by peers.

"The bullying was severe. The children were stigmatized," Mrs. Emmanouil said, noting the family secured certified psychological support for one of their children following the sustained harassment.

The family originally moved to Fourna seeking a quieter life and economic opportunity.

Their rural integration was backed by a year of free housing and a €14,000 female entrepreneurship subsidy used to open a local eatery, "Ligo ap' ola."

However, the restaurant quickly folded.

"It was a risk that didn't pay off. On to the next," Mr. Kostopoulos said of the financial setback, though both parents emphasized the hostile school environment was the breaking point.

Following interventions by educational authorities during the June exam period, the family packed up and relocated to the Aegean island of Naxos.

Mr. Kostopoulos has secured work as a driver, while Mrs. Emmanouil is employed at a local supermarket.

Mrs. Emmanouil’s sister, a single mother seeking smaller class sizes for her own children, elected to remain in Fourna alongside their mother.

Reflecting on a rural experiment that ended in disillusionment, Mrs. Emmanouil was blunt about the experience.

"We didn't leave with anger, we left with bitterness," Mrs. Emmanouil said. "The promises weren't kept, and our kids didn't have a good time."
