DUTHSat-2: Greece Enters Space with First CubeSat Launch

Launch of DUTHSat-2: Greece’s First CubeSat under the National Microsatellite Programme with ESA Support

The launch of DUTHSat-2, the first CubeSat satellite under the National Microsatellite Programme with the support of the European Space Agency (ESA). The satellite was launched from the Vandenberg Air

Force Base in the USA, with a Falcon-9 rocket as part of the Transporter-14 mission of SpaceX (Elon musks space company).

As Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou stated: "We have the first satellite with a Greek flag in space. The DUTHSat-2 cube satellite is an excellent example of what can be achieved when the Greek scientific community collaborates effectively with industry."

The DUTHSat-2 satellite was designed and manufactured by a scientific team from the Democritus University of Thrace, in collaboration with Greek companies. "The development of such projects within the university community strengthens the extroversion of institutions, creates opportunities for young scientists and contributes substantially to connecting research with the needs of society and the economy," the Ministry of Digital Governance said in a statement.

DUTHSAT-2, which weighs 7 kg, traveled for about an hour on the Falcon-9 rocket along with other satellites and was released into orbit at an altitude of 510 km above sea level. A painstaking process will now follow for placing it in orbit and starting its operational activity.

Following six months of successful communication with the satellite, DUTHSat-2 will conduct in-orbit validation of new experimental Earth observation devices (optical cameras) and secure connectivity (telecommunication systems).
