Athens Taxi Driver Accused of Scamming Tourists with Inflated Fare

Arecent incident in Athens has highlighted the issue of taxi scamstargeting tourists, with five Dutch nationals allegedly charged 292euros for a short four-kilometer ride.

Accordingto local news reports this past week, the tourists used a mobile

appto hail a cab from Ermou Street in the city center to the nearbyPangrati district, presumably their accommodation.

Beyondthe exorbitant fare, standard taxis in the Athens-Piraeus areatypically accommodate a maximum of four passengers, making a ridewith five potentially illegal.

Thealleged scam came to light a few hours later when the tourists took asecond taxi from Pangrati to the Acropolis, near their initial pickuppoint.

Thistime, the fare was only 10 euros.

Uponhearing about the previous charge, the second taxi driver notifiedthe taxi union about the incident.

Itis unclear whether a criminal investigation has been launched.
