Athens Calls for Restraint Amid Middle East Tensions

Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel has been condemned by Greece with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also calling for restraint from all involved parties.

The prime minister’s warning sounded after a session of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA), where the latest developments were discussed after more than

300 projectiles – 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles – were fired at Israel in an immense aerial attack.

Said Mr. Mitsotakis in a comment posted across social media:. “I strongly condemn the attacks launched by Iran against Israel. Any escalation poses a threat to regional stability and security. We stand with Israel and urge all sides to show restraint,” he stated.

The KYSEA meeting focused on potential implications of the attacks. Sources close to the council have suggested that despite the current atmosphere of heightened alert, there appears to be a tentative “de-escalation” of tensions.

Nonetheless, sources said, Greece remained vigilant, maintaining open lines of communication with both Israel and the United States, acknowledging the unpredictability of the situation.

Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and government spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, reinforced Greece’s position in an official announcement.

“Greece unequivocally condemns the attack against Israel and the threats to regional stability and security,” he affirmed.

Marinakis further emphasized Greece’s role as a “pillar of stability and security in the region,” highlighting the necessity for all sides to exercise restraint to prevent a broader regional conflict.
