23 Arrested in Greece Artifact Smuggling Ring Bust

Greek authoritiesarrested 23 people suspected of involvement in three artifactsmuggling rings operating in Northern Greece, police said.

The organizationsconducted illegal excavations, sometimes using explosives, in theSerres and Thessaloniki regions.

The Hellenic Policesaid two of the groups focused on illicit archaeological excavations,theft, and illegal export of ancient artifacts.

A third groupconcentrated

on treasure hunting, seeking gold coins and othervaluable objects.

A large-scale policeoperation on March 13 resulted in the arrests.

Fifty people havebeen charged in connection with the crimes, which date back toSeptember 2024.

The groups usedcounter-surveillance tactics and coded language to evade detection.Ancient coins were referred to as "trinkets," andexcavation finds as "blessings."

Authoritiesconfiscated 2,465 ancient artifacts.

One arrestedindividual was a foreign national.

An employee of theArchaeological Service was involved in one of the rings, providingexpertise for targeted excavations.
