Title: Post-Doctoral Researcher
Number of positions: One (1)
Category: Fulltime contract for 18 months
Place of Employment: University of Cyprus, Nicosia
Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Researcher position in Wireless Communications and/or Signal Processing
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The team
The Mobile Communications and Networking (MCN) Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering, University of Cyprus, invites qualified young researchers to express their interest for an 18-month Research
Fellowship in Wireless Communications and/or Signal Processing.
The Fellowship is within the context of a Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation-funded project, on “Full Duplex Radio:
modeling, analysis and Design (FD-RD)”.
The successful candidate will be in charge of studies the fundamental limits of the FD radio technology, design new FDbased
protocols and transmission schemes as well as of investigation potential energy savings associated with the FD
operation mode.

Project Description
Until now, wireless communication operations have assumed half-duplex (HD) mode where orthogonal channels are
used to transmit and receive data. However, HD operation creates a loss of bandwidth and spectral efficiency. In order
to overcome this challenge, several protocols and schemes have been proposed in the literature. Most of them are
complex and sometimes use strong assumptions, which do not hold in practical systems. On the other hand, a promising
technology to realize high spectral efficiency is the full-duplex (FD) operation. In the FD mode, a transceiver can
simultaneously transmit and receive data. Until recently, FD operation was considered to be unrealistic mainly due to
harmful effects of the loopback interference (LI) from the output antennas to input antennas. However, with the recent
advances in antenna technology, electronics and signal processing, FD operation is a practical solution with several
potential gains for the wireless systems. Most of the existing research on FD deals with the mitigation of the LI in the time
domain or in the spatial domain, which is a vital condition for the implementation of the FD mode. However, the impact
of the FD technology on the wireless systems is still a fundamental open question.
In this project, we study the integration of the FD operation mode into wireless communication systems with an emphasis
on bidirectional and cooperative networks. Our main objective is to model the multi-dimensional degradation effects of LI,
the performance analysis of systems with FD capabilities and the design of new FD-based protocols and transmissions
schemes. Specifically, we study the impact of channel estimation error on the FD performance, the integration of the FD
operation mode into next generation cellular communication systems as well as the potential energy savings provided by
the FD technology. The application of the FD operation mode in cellular networks motivates efficient downlink/uplink
transmission schemes, while its combination with massive multiple-input multiple output configurations and device-todevice
techniques enables new applications and services. On the other hand, FD seems to be a promising solution in
order to reduce the energy consumption of a communication network and its interplay with energy harvesting
technologies is a fundamental research problem.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & PERSON PROFILE:
The candidate is expected to be a highly-motivated individual with proven research experience in the domain of Wireless
Communications and/or Signal Processing and/or Networks. Minimal requirements include:
• A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with a track
record of research in wireless communications and networks.
Background in communication theory (modulation, coding, diversity techniques, etc).
Employment Terms:
• This position is on a contract basis for a period of eighteen (18) months. The monthly gross salary will be
€2100. Employer and Employee contributions to social security etc. will be covered by the gross salary of the
employee. There is no provision for 13th salary or medical and pharmaceutical insurance.
