Moscow inaugurates MCD-4

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin on 9 September 2023 launched a fourth Moscow Central Diameter (MCD-4), a suburban commuter line that runs across the city.

The MCD-4 is the longest among the diameters – its length is 86 kilometres. The new diameter creates a surface metro

line, which runs from West to East through Moscow and connects seven central railway terminals of the capital. It provides for the largest number of transfer stations – 18 with 36 options of interchanges to the metro, MCC and other diameters – the fare has been reduced up to 3 times. In the future, two more stations will open: Begovaya and Rizhskaya.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin launched one more diameter – this is a large-scale project we have implemented for the residents of the Moscow agglomeration. The D4 has connected more than 20 districts of Moscow and 4 cities in the Moscow region. We forecast that it will be used by 260-270 thousand people per day by the end of 2023. At the same time, the infrastructure is designed to accommodate future growth in passenger traffic. We will continue to develop the diameter after the launch of MCD-4: we will build two Moscow city stations Begovaya and Rizhskaya, renew the rolling stock, – said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for transport.

Maksim Liksutov added that modern comfortable trains run on the new line: EP2D and EP2DM, which run at intervals of up to 5 – 5.5 minutes during peak hours and without interruptions during the daytime. And in the future the line will have the most modern trains – three-door Ivolga 4.0.

The fleet of MCD-4 trains is planned to be completely renewed till 2025.

It is expected that the nearby lines of the Moscow Metro will be relieved by 9% due to the redistribution of passenger flows, while the daily passenger flow of the fourth diameter may reach 455 thousand people.

In August, Moscow launched the third Moscow Central Diameter (MCD-3). Its length was 85 kilometres. It connected the districts of the north-west and south-east of Moscow.
