Οι χάρτινες σιλουέτες του Rich McCor (εικόνες)

Ο Ριτς ΜακΚόρ (Rich McCor) ταξιδεύει στη σφαίρα και μεταμορφώνει, δημιουργικά, κτίρια, γέφυρες, πινακίδες χρησιμοποιώντας φιγούρες που κόβει από χαρτί.

Τοποθετεί ένα μαύρο σχέδιο του μπροστά από την εικόνα, και μέσα από τον φακό της φωτογραφικής μηχανής του, η Tower Bridge στο Λονδίνο γίνεται εναέριο τραινάκι του λούνα παρκ. Ένα κτίριο σε κάποια πόλη του Καναδά εμφανίζεται σαν ένα ακορντεόν την ώρα που παίζει ο σολίστας του μουσικού οργάνου.

Δεν κάνει κάτι πολύ διαφορετικό από αυτό που κάνει η φαντασία μας όταν στεκόμαστε μπροστά σε μια θέα. Πόσες φορές δεν έχουμε συλλάβει τον εαυτό

Μιλώντας για τον εαυτό του, ο Ριτς λέει ότι «ζω στο Λονδίνο και περνάω τις περισσότερες μέρες μου κόβοντας με ψαλίδι φιγούρες από χαρτί και, μετά, τις φωτογραφίζω με φόντο διάφορα, σε όλον τον κόσμο. Θέλω να λέω ότι είμαι φωτογράφος. Όμως η αλήθεια είναι ότι άρχισα να υπηρετώ το δικό μου καλλιτεχνικό ύφος γιατί δεν ήμουν καλός φωτογράφος, οπότε μάλλον τείνω στο ότι είμαι καλλιτέχνης».

Ο Ριτς – που είναι γνωστός ως @paperboyo – δεν χρησιμοποιεί μόνον αρχιτεκτονήματα ως φόντο στις φωτογραφίες των φιγούρων του, αλλά και φυσικά τοπία. Πρόσφατα, μάλιστα, εξέδωσε κι ένα βιβλίο με τα ταξίδια που κάνουν οι χάρτινες φιγούρες του στον κόσμο. Τίτλος του, «Around the World in Cut-Outs» (μας θυμίζει κάτι αυτό το «Ο γύρος του κόσμου σε…»;).

In 2005 the mayor of Mississauga, a City West of Toronto, announced an international design competition for a tower to be known as Absolute World. Two years later, after a public vote, the winner was selected- Yasong Ma, of MAD Architectural Design Studio in Beijing. Pretty quickly the spiralling, curvaceous tower was nicknamed Marilyn Monroe. When apartments in Marilyn Monroe went on sale, they all sold within 24 hours. So naturally the developers quickly announced that a second Marilyn Monroe was going to be built, also spiralling and asymmetric but apparently this was going to be Marilyn after a binge because the second tower was designed to be rounder and plumper so as to accommodate more apartments #ExploreCanada #MyCanadianAffair @ExploreCanada @airtransat #Toronto

Probably the most enticing name for a beach ever, Sugar Beach is an urban beach just across from the Redpath Sugar Refinery. In keeping with the theme the sand is almost white and there are pink candy coloured umbrellas dotted around. I’ve got a few more Toronto images to share with you all. This one, with the CN tower, might just be my new favourite photo. The evening I took this I was on the only boat on the water as the sky danced through a spectrum of colours, each colour change transforming the water around me as well as the skyline ahead. The boat’s skipper & I snapped away on our cameras, only stopping to whisper ‘wow’ as another colour came to the palette. I was in my element, but it was only with a bit of luck and a dash of Canadian friendliness that I’d managed to get here. I was in Toronto in June, when the islands were closed due to floods so the ferries weren’t running & the water taxis were finishing in the middle of the afternoons. I’d walked down to the harbour to see if I could get out on the water for sunsets but was greeted with headshakes. Eventually I managed to turn one of those headshakes into a nod and so I have to give a shoutout to @infinitywatertaxitoronto, you’re a legend. This setting is on the shore of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a small town where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. While I was holding up the bride & groom cutout, a local lady told me that that couples can actually get married in the bandstand, which provided a nice bit of serendipitous context for this caption. At the top of Niagara falls, in the middle of the river, is the wreck of a barge boat. It came to be there on a summer’s day in 1918 when two men, Gustave Lofberg & Frank Harris, came perilously close to plunging over the falls on it. They were dredging sand one mile upstream when a safety cable snapped and sent them adrift down the Niagara River. Nearby tugs raced to help but had to turn back helplessly as the boat entered ferocious rapids. Just hundreds of metres from the brink of the falls, the two men were preparing themselves for what was coming when suddenly a bump, a skid, a dragging sensation. Then nothing at all. The vessel miraculously grounded itself on a rocky shoal. Various attempts were made to rescue the men, but it wasn’t until sixteen hours later when a breeches buoy was finally set-up to take them off the barge. Everyone involved knew the rapids could have dislodged the boat at any moment, but to this today the boat remains exactly where it stopped almost a century ago. If you saw my Insta Stories from Croatia a couple of weeks ago you’ll know I had a whale of a time -pause for laughter- on an island called @obonjan with @visual.fodder and @morenatravels. Obonjan is a previously un-inhabited island, about forty minutes off the coast of Sibenik, that the team behind Hideout Festival have turned into a summer long festival. Unlike other festivals though the focus here is on wellbeing with daily yoga & meditation classes and a treatment spa nestled within a pine forest. Around the island DJs provide the soundtrack for the long afternoons, whilst those in search of peace can find it in secluded beach coves. When the sky darkens, musicians begin the entertainment in the open air amphitheatre as cocktails flow in the bars. I loved all of the above, but the truly unique thing about Obonjan is that if you venture to the beach at night, you’ll find an impressive looking telescope. A glimpse through it brings you freakishly close to craters on the moon’s surface and if you’re lucky you’ll even catch sight of the Andromeda Galaxy.
