Οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι σιχαίνονται, αν όχι φοβούνται τις νυχτερίδες. Το γεγονός ότι είναι νυκτόβια πλάσματα, σε συνδυασμό με το γεγονός ότι πετάει με την βοήθεια μεμβρανών -και όχι με πουπουλένια φτερά-, έχουν δημιουργήσει μια αρνητική εικόνα για το συγκεκριμένο θηλαστικό. Εάν μάλιστα αναλογιστεί κανείς ότι έχουν συνδεθεί με τα βαμπίρ της μυθολογίας, τότε η κατάσταση γίνεται ακόμα χειρότερη.

Όμως οι νυχτερίδες μπορούν και είναι χαριτωμένες και το παρακάτω viral βίντεο το αποδεικνύει. Η φασκιωμένη νυχτερίδα που απολαμβάνει μια φέτα καρπούζι ονομάζεται Σάντεϊ και ζει στην Αυστραλία με μια οικογένεια που φροντίζει ζώα που έχουν τραυματιστεί. Η Σάντεϊ ανήκει στα μεγαλύτερα και -ίσως- πιο χαριτωμένα είδη νυχτερίδων, της λεγόμενες «ιπτάμενες αλεπούδες» (Pteropus). Η ίδια λατρεύει τα φρούτα, κάτι το οποίο μπορεί να καταλάβει κανείς εάν ακολουθήσει τον λογαριασμό της στο Instagram. Στο σημείο αυτό να αναφέρουμε ότι το συγκεκριμένο θηλαστικό δεν είναι κατοικίδιο και πρόκειται να απελευθερωθεί μόλις αναρρώσει από έναν ελαφρύ τραυματισμό που είχε.

When Sunday was just a few weeks old I'll explain why we wrap them up like this. Flying foxes cannot fly until they are three months old, so from birth they hug onto their mothers for dear life. We use a 'muma roll' (the light blue roll) to mimic their mothers body. Their mothers wrap their wings around the babies for safety, comfort, and to keep them warm as the babies can't self-regulate their own temperature for a few weeks. We wrap a cloth around them (dark blue cloth) to mimic their mothers wings.
