Informal EU defence ministers” council begins in Athens

The two-day informal EU defence ministers” council kicked off on Thursday at the Zappion building, the headquarters of the Greek EU presidency in Athens.

According to an announcement, the EU member-state defence

ministers will discuss issues relating to EU operations currently underway in the Horn of Africa, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mali and Somalia, as well as the planned operation in the Central Africa Republic and the next steps in implementing decisions taken at the EU summit in December 2013.

On the sidelines of the council, National Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos had meetings with the European External Action Service Deputy Secretary Genreal Maciej Popowski and the UN Under Secretary General for peacekeeping operations Herve Ladsous. The latter meeting was also attended by the head of the Greek armed forces general staff.

Prior to the council meeting, Avramopoulos had a meeting with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian.
