Leftist leader’s financial secrecy raises eyebrows

Syriza president Stefanos Kasselakis has flatly refused to disclose his financial assets, stoking public debate about transparency and accountability in political leadership.

Mr. Kasselakis’ open snub came during a televised interview, as the leftist leader showcased his newly-bought pad in a posh pocket of central Athens.

His response to the journalist’s question about financial disclosure was emphatic: “You are not my accountant. I am not going to answer you.”

“I haven’t sat down to count the entire organizational chart,” he added, referring to a web of companies he controls in the United States. He acknowledged the existence of a mother company based in the state of Florida, but refused to elaborate.

Mr. Kasselakis insisted that he was not in breach of any financial regulation and that all earnings generated in the United States had been taxed there.

Mr. Kasselakis said his move and relocation to Greece was driven more by his foray into local politics than other professional or financial reasons.
