Το τρίτο μονοθέσιο που βλέπουμε σήμερα, μετά από τις Mercedes W07 και McLaren MP4-31, είναι αυτό της Haas. Οι στόχοι των Αμερικανών για την πρώτη τους σεζόν είναι αρκετά υψηλοί, στοχεύοντας σε βαθμούς από τον πρώτο αγώνα, καθώς πιστεύουν ότι η δουλειά που έχουν κάνει εδώ και δύο χρόνια πάνω στη νέα VF-16 είναι πολύ καλή.

Μιας και είναι το πρώτο μονοθέσιο της ομάδας, δεν έχουμε κάτι

για να συγκρίνουμε, όπως έχει συμβεί και θα συμβεί με τις άλλες ομάδες. Τα χρώματα που κυριαρχούν είναι το ασημί, το μαύρο και το κόκκινο, ενώ η αμερικανική σημαία δεν απουσιάζει, όπως είναι σύνηθες για τους Αμερικανούς, με το σασί να κατασκευάζεται από την Dallara.

Στα του μονοθεσίου, η VF-16 διαθέτει αρκετά απλοϊκό σχεδιασμό, με το ρύγχος να είναι κοντό, όπως συμβαίνει με τα περισσότερα φετινά μονοθέσια. Η εμπρός ανάρτηση είναι σε διάταξη push-rod, αντίθετα με τον πίσω άξονα, εκεί που βλέπουμε pull-rod, όπως γίνεται παραδοσιακά. Οι εισαγωγές αέρα στα sidepods έχουν αρκετά τριγωνικό σχήμα, με τα pod wings και τα barge board να είναι απλοϊκά σχεδιασμένα.

Τριγωνικό άνοιγμα και για την εισαγωγή αέρα πάνω από το κεφάλι του οδηγού, όταν το μέγεθος των sidepods δεν εντυπωσιάζει με το μικρό μέγεθος, αφού οι κορυφαίες ομάδες τα έχουν καταφέρει καλύτερα σε αυτό. Το ίδιο ισχύει για το πίσω μέρος, ενώ η πίσω αεροτομή δανείζεται σχεδιαστικά στοιχεία από άλλες ομάδες.

Η VF-16 όχι απλώς παρουσιάστηκε, αλλά πάτησε και πίστα, γράφοντας τα πρώτα της χιλιόμετρα στην πίστα της Βαρκελώνης, πριν από την έναρξη των δοκιμών αύριο. Τέλος το όνομα του μονοθεσίου μάς πηγαίνει πίσω στο 1988, όταν η Haas Automation κατασκεύασε τον πρώτο CNC τόρνο. Επίσης, ο Gene Haas, είπε ότι το «VF-1» ικανοποιεί και το «Very First One», δηλαδή το παρθενικό μονοθέσιο Formula 1 της εταιρείας.

Haas F1 Team’s ‘Very First’ Racecar Arrives at Barcelona Test

BARCELONA, Spain (Feb. 21, 2016) – The VF-16, Haas F1 Team’s first racecar, has arrived. The car officially broke cover today via Haas F1 Team’s social media channels and Website. It hits the track Monday for the first day of preseason testing at the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya.

The origin of naming the car “VF-16” goes back to the first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation, the VF-1, launched in 1988. The “V” stands for vertical, which is an industry standard designation for a vertical mill. Gene Haas, founder of Haas Automation, added “F1” to the name to unofficially designate it as the company’s “Very First One”.

Click for high res imagery.Now as chairman of Haas F1 Team, the “F1” moniker of that first machine takes on new significance as Haas joins the 2016 FIA Formula One World Championship, becoming the first American-led Formula One team in 30 years.

Click for high res image.The dark gray, light gray and red-toned livery of the VF-16 was derived from the scheme of Haas Automation’s complete line of vertical and horizontal machining centers, turning centers and rotary tables and indexers. Approximately 1,300 employees encompass Haas Automation, with the Oxnard, California-based company exporting its machines to more than 60 countries. The VF-16 showcases Haas Automation’s commitment to technology and innovation to a passionate, global audience.

“Just as Haas Automation’s products continually evolve, becoming better and more efficient, our methodology behind the VF-16 was to make it the best evolution of a good F1 car,” said Guenther Steiner, team principal, Haas F1 Team. “We’re a new team, so we looked at what the successful teams were doing to give us a baseline of the direction we needed to go with our design.

“We have very experienced designers who worked hard to develop all the little things from an aerodynamic perspective that, collectively, add up to a lot. And our technical partner, Ferrari, provided our power unit, and that really defined the rear end of the car and how big it needed to be.

“Our goal with this car is to score points,” Steiner states. “First, we need to go out there and show that we can do the job, that we can finish races, that we are respected by the fans and other teams in the paddock. Then, we want to score points. That is the ultimate goal.”

The VF-16 tests at Barcelona Feb. 22-25 and again March 1-4 before its debut race, the season-opening Australian Grand Prix March 20 in Melbourne.

Haas F1 Team will still facilitate a physical unveil of the VF-16, its debut racecar, at 7:50 a.m. CET on Monday, Feb. 22 on the pit lane outside of its garage stall at the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya.

While the digital unveil took place today, this physical unveil Monday morning will allow still and video photographers onsite at Barcelona the opportunity to capture imagery of the car together with our drivers, Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez.
