ŠKODA wants to become even greener

› The car maker wants to continue to lower the CO2 emissions of ŠKODA vehicles as well as organize its production and distribution processes in a more sustainable fashion› ‘GreenFuture’ strategy to bundle all sustainability measures› The most efficient ŠKODA Octavia of all times – a fuel consumption of 3.3 liter of diesel per 100 km and emissions of 87 grams CO2/km› 48 ŠKODA models already under 120 g CO2/km, ten under 100 g CO2/km› ŠKODA production to use 25 percent fewer resources› ‘GreenFuture’ is part of the environmental goals of the Volkswagen Group until 2018

Mladá Boleslav, 7 March 2013 – ŠKODA is stepping up its sustainability efforts and, for this purpose, is bundling all of its measures under the strategy ‘GreenFuture’. The goal is to make ŠKODA models even more fuel-efficient and to organize the use of resources in an even more sustainable fashion. With a consumption of 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 km and emissions of 87 grams of CO2 per km, the GreenLine version of the new ŠKODA Octavia generation will be the most fuel-efficient Octavia ever. One of the focuses in production: until 2018, ŠKODA wants to lower the energy and water use as well as the waste and emission quantities by 25 percent per vehicle. ‘GreenFuture’ is an integral part of the ŠKODA Growth Strategy 2018 and the environmental strategy of the Volkswagen Group.

“ŠKODA has been honoring its responsibility for the environment for many years,” says ŠKODA’s Chairman of the Board, Prof. Dr. h. c. Winfried Vahland. “With ‘GreenFuture’, we will significantly step up and bundle our efforts for increased sustainability once more. We want to offer particularly environmentally-friendly automobiles and to manufacture and sell them in an even more sustainable fashion. ‘GreenFuture’ is a clear, measurable commitment by the company and its employees toward environmental protection. We are investing in our green future. ‘GreenFuture’ is part of our Growth Strategy 2018 and, at the same time, an important part of the goal of the Volkswagen Group to become the leading environmentally-friendly automobile manufacturer in the world by 2018,” emphasizes Vahland.

At ŠKODA, ‘GreenFuture’ rests on the pillars GreenProduct, GreenFactory and GreenRetail. Since 1991, the company’s direct expenditures for a sustainable use of resources have amounted to more than 410 million EUR. In addition, ŠKODA has made investments in environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes, energy-saving facilities and the enhanced efficiency of its vehicles.

ŠKODA also continues to speed up its efforts with regard to fuel consumption and the emissions of its model range. All the required measures are combined in GreenProduct. This fact finds particular expression in ŠKODA’s GreenLine and Greentec models. For example, the GreenLine version of the new ŠKODA Octavia generation will be the most fuel-efficient Octavia ever – with a consumption of only 3.3 liters diesel per 100 kilometers and CO2 emissions of 87 grams per kilometer.

ŠKODA wants to lower the average CO2 emissions of all of its vehicle models even further. In order to accomplish this goal, the Czech manufacturer and the Volkswagen Group are jointly working on modern technologies that contribute toward energy-efficient operation and decreased environmental pollution. At the present time, ŠKODA offers 48 models with emission figures of less than 120 g of CO2 per km, of which ten models have emissions of less than 100 g of CO2 per km. With the ŠKODA Citigo CNG, the company has been selling its first natural gas powered vehicle since October 2012. The natural gas powered Citigo emits only 79 g of CO2 per km. Also available this year will be a version of the new Octavia powered with natural gas.

Furthermore, ŠKODA is also conducting tests with regard to electric mobility. At the present time, a test fleet of ten electrically powered Octavia Green E-Line vehicles is being driven across Czech roads in cooperation with renowned partners to collect data supporting the research for emission-free mobility. All new ŠKODA vehicles are also recyclable at a level of at least 85 percent.

Vehicle production is another important aspect of the ‘GreenFuture’ strategy. Until 2018, ŠKODA wants to organize its own production in such a way that it will be another 25 percent more environmentally friendly. Within the framework of GreenFactory, the focus is primarily on thresholds such as energy and water consumption or the amount of waste generated in the manufacture of one vehicle. Likewise, emissions such as CO2 and the so-called VOC (“volatile organic compounds”) – which are, for example, generated during the painting of car bodies – are to be lowered by one quarter.

One current example for resource-efficient production is the new press line at the plant in Mladá Boleslav, which was commissioned at the beginning of February. The new press line works more effectively and is among the most modern facilities of its kind in Europe. It requires up to 15 percent less energy than comparable older facilities and is able to temporarily store energy not needed at the time. Together with the Volkswagen Group, ŠKODA invested about 66 million EUR in this press line alone.

Another important factor for an environmentally-friendly manufacture is the supply with heat and energy. For example, at the current time, brown coal used for the generation of heat and energy at the ŠKODA plant in Mladá Boleslav is substituted with biomass in the form of wood pellets. The CO2 emissions generated within the manufacturing process are thus decreased by about 45,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The third pillar of the ŠKODA sustainability strategy is GreenRetail. This concerns the environmental protection in dealerships and repair workshops. For example, environmental audits are performed on a regular basis in order to verify the compliance with environmental standards. Campaigns such as the ‘Spring Cleaning 2012’ conducted in the Czech Republic have led to the removal of 95 tons of unusable or discarded materials from the storage areas of service partners, almost 90 percent of which could be reprocessed.

Environmental protection and sustainability are management issues for ŠKODA. The ‘GreenFuture’ steering team reports directly to the company board. At the same time, the manufacturer relies on the active cooperation of its approx. 26,500 employees. One example of the high commitment of the ŠKODA team is the ongoing campaign ‘A tree for each car sold in the Czech Republic’: Since 2007, ŠKODA has been planting one tree for each car sold in the country. To date, about 363,000 trees have been planted; this year, almost 60,000 additional scions will be planted.

The model offensive is being accompanied by attractive new special edition models. ŠKODA will be exhibiting the Fabia Combi Monte Carlo and the Roomster Noire in Geneva for the first time.
