Ένας μαγευτικός κόσμος σε ένα από τα τελευταία εργαστήρια που φτιάχνουν υπέροχες, χειροποίητες υδρόγειες σφαίρες

Η ιστορία του Peter Bellerby ξεκίνησε το 2008 μετά από μια αποτυχημένη προσπάθεια να βρει ένα ξεχωριστό δώρο για τα 80α γενέθλια του πατέρα του. Αυτή η αποτυχία ήταν που του έδωσε και την ιδέα να κατασκευάσει μόνος του, αυτό που δεν μπορούσε να βρει διαθέσιμο προς πώληση στην αγορά.

Επτά χρόνια μετά τον βρίσκουμε στο Λονδίνο και στο ιδιαίτερο εργαστήριο της Bellerby &Co να φτιάχνει χειροποίητες, και με παραδοσιακό τρόπο, έγχρωμες υδρόγειες σφαίρες, μοναδικής αισθητικής- με μια αποικιακής περιόδου διάθεση-αξιοποιώντας όμως κάθε τελευταία εξέλιξη στη σύγχρονη χαρτογραφία. Μια ιδέα του ιδιαίτερου όσο όμως και κοπιαστικού- κυρίως εξαιτίας των λεπτών κινήσεων που απατούνται- τρόπου κατασκευής τους, μπορείτει να πάρετε από το video που σας βάζει στα άδυτα του εργαστηρίου, που είναι και έαν από τα τελευταί στον κόσμο που συνεχίζουν να φτιάχνουν χειροποίητες υδρογειες σφαίρες.

Η συλλογή που έχει να προσφέρει στους ενδιαφερόμενους η συγκεκριμένη εταιρεία, είναι μεγάλη και φαίνεται αρκετά δύσκολο για τον πελάτη να μπορέσει να διαλέξει ανάμεσα στα αντικείμενα που μοιάζουν με μικρά έργα τέχνης. Βέβαια το κόστος είναι ένα θέμα...καθώς οι τιμές ξεκινούν από τις 999 βρετανικές λίρες.

Μεταξύ πάντως των διάσημων πελατών του Bellerby είναι ο σκηνοθέτης Marin Scorsese ο οποίος αγόρασε δύο υδρογειους το 2011 για την ταινία Hugo αλλά και ο Kevin Spacey ενώ η εταιρεία κερδίζει συνεχώς έδαφος μεταξύ των απαιτητικών – αλλά και με φουσκωμένες τσέπες- πελατών και συλλεκτών και κυρίως μετά το 2014 και την συμμετοχή της στην έκθεση της Royal Geographic Society στο Λονδίνο.

Μέχρι όμως να γίνει δεκτός σε έναν τόσο απαιτητικό κύκλο, πέρασε πολλά. Ο αυτοδίδακτος Bellerby, μιλώντας στο Slate.com, υποστήριξε πως του πήρε περίπου 18 μήνες μέχρι να τελειοποιήσει τη διαδικασία κατασκευής κάθε υδρογείου, στην οποία και κατέληξε. Το πιο δύσκολο σε όλη τη διαδικασία, όπως ανέφερε, είναι να εφαρμόσεις πάνω στη σφαίρα τα κομμάτια του χάρτη που είναι από πεπιεσμένο χαρτί. «Έχουμε ένα βρεγμένο χαρτί που στη συνέχεια το τεντώνουμε, πηγαίνοντας κόντρα στην φυσική τάση του χαρτιού δηλ. το σκήσιμο», ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά. Περιττό βέβαια να αναφέρουμε πως απαιτείται απόλυτη ακρίβεια στην εφαρμογή του κάθε της κάθε «πιέτας» όπως αποκαλεί ο κατασκευαστής κάθε κομμάτι χαρτιού που εφαρμόζει στη σφαίρα. Διαφορετικά τα μήκη και τα πλάτη της υδρογείου δεν θα είναι ευθυγραμμισμένα ή κάποιες χώρες μπορεί ακόμη και να μην φαίνονται, όπως συνήθως συμβαίνει σε κάποια υδρόγειο που έχει κατασκευαστεί με προχειρότητα.

Ο Bellerby εργάζεται μαζί με μια ομάδα έξι ατόμων, μεταξύ των οποίων ο άνθρωπος που δίνει χρώμα στην υδρόγειο- globe painter- και δύο μαθητευόμενοι. Προκειμένου δε να μάθει κάποιος να φτιάχνει μια χειροποίητη- και σε πρώτη φάση μικρή- υδρόγειο σφαίρα απαιτείται περίπου ένας χρόνος «και πολύ περισσότερος για τις μεγαλύτερες» όπως σπεύδει να αναφέρει ο Bellerby τονίζοντας πόσες δυσκολίες συνάντησε μέχρι να τελειοποιήσει τις μεθόδους...

"The aesthetic that inspired me initially was the globes of several hundred years ago, as we’ve moved on we have developed our own aesthetic and essentially it is underpinned by the fact that we hand colour each globe, so they are all unique On much of the cartography, we place the letters individually because back in the day when they were using copper plates it was all done by hand, and the slight irregularity is a pleasing aesthetic. The Celestial globe is a three-dimensional map of the stars, and has been used since classical times.
