Work begins on expansion of Chania airport, Crete

Work began on Friday on expanding the "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" airport in the western Crete city of Chania, from its current 13,325 square metres surface area to 31,572 sqm, including a new air traffic control tower.

The project is expected to be completed by end-2015, and will serve a rising number of tourists arriving to the island especially in the summer months. It is assessed at 110 million euros, with funding coming from the EU's National Strategic Reference Framework programme. Between 230 and 300 people will be employed there.

Third parliamentary vice-president Christos Markogiannakis, visiting the area today, said this was the largest development project on Crete.
