Diplomatic Sources: Greece expresses position on Gaza institutionally as UNSC member, not through donor initiatives

According to diplomatic sources, "Greece has consistently supported the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza from the very beginning."

The same sources state that Greece maintains constant communication with the Palestinian Authority, which it has supported from the outset as the only legitimate representative of the Palestinians. Moreover, this morning the Greek Foreign Minister had renewed contact with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Mohamed Mustafa, on the issue of humanitarian aid.

The same sources note that on the initiative of Greece, as chair of the Security Council in the month of May, the issue of the protection of civilians, which has been a priority of Greece's term of office, is being discussed in New York on Thursday. The meeting will be chaired by Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis.

"Greece has continued to actively support the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), despite complaints against it and the withdrawal of support from other European countries," the sources said.

Also, at the initiative of Gerrapetritis at the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council, member states undertook to provide medical treatment to injured children from Gaza. Greece has already received 11 children in hospitals, and more are expected.

"Greece, as a member of the UN Security Council, must address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza in an institutional capacity rather than solely through donor initiatives," the sources stated. "In this context, Greece co-signed a Joint Statement from European states in the Security Council regarding the necessity for humanitarian aid in Gaza and also participated in the Statement issued by the European Union and its member states on the same matter."
